The Unofficial Emoticons AKA Smilies,ASCII-grams Dictionary:

The emoticon is a cute little symbol, made from regular ASCII keyboard
characters, that you can see by cocking your head all the way to the left.
Emoticons are also called Smilies and ASCII-grams.

Use them if you want. Emoticons remind me of dotting your screen with happy
faces. On the other hand, they can sometimes say more than a thousand
words.

Most emoticons consist of three stages, assembled from left to right:

The stages are assembled like this:

The first class of emoticons depict human or humanoid faces.

Normally they 詒e used to comment on the mental, emotional, or physical
state of the sender or receiver.
